RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Sophomores Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) and Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun) finished the weekend unbeaten as the NIU men's tennis team concluded play at the River Forest Collegiate Invitational.

"I thought we struggled this weekend," said NIU head coach Patrick Fisher. "Some of our guys weren't committed to playing the style that is going to help them be most effective. We are behind where we should be, we are further behind where we were last year when we had five freshmen. We know where we are at now and we have to turn it on. We have to play with more discipline.

"That said we did have some good individual performances. I think the standouts were Georg and Tom, they played well this week and hopefully we can build on that."

Both Hjertonsson and Lundkvist played in Flight B singles, going 3-0 on the weekend. Lundkvist opened with a 3-6, 6-1, 10-4 win over Chris Cole of UIC before beating Belmont's Steven Goldman, 6-3, 6-2. In his final match, Lundkvist defeated Emerson Styles of South Dakota State.

Hjertonsson started the tournament with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Kacper Stemaszak of Detroit. He then defeated Gabe Araujo of Xavier, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 before closing with a victory over Arthur Stefani of Xavier.

In Flight A, senior Simon Formont (Orléans, France/Lycée Camille Claudel) collected a pair of wins, downing Ivan Divkovic of DePaul, 6-2, 6-2, and Belmont's Bruno Rosso. Sophomore Kevin Daun (Vasteras, Sweden/Widenska Gymnasiet Idrottscollege) also won two matches in Flight C, bettering Belmont's Toby Nicholson, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 10-3, and DePaul's Tim Corwin.

NIU will return to action next weekend as it travels to the SIU Edwardsville Invite. The two-day tournament will take place on Friday, Sept. 18 and Saturday, Sept. 19.
