EMU 84, NIU 60
YPSILANTI, Mich. - The NIU Huskies outscored Eastern Michigan on fast breaks, 21-0, pushing the ball through the Eagles defense to wide open baskets. However, the NIU (10-15, 3-11 MAC) offense was not efficient enough as it fell to EMU (17-8-6 MAC) Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center, 84-60.
Courtney Woods (Brisbane, Australia/St. Margaret's Anglican) scored a career-high 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting, going 5-of-8 from the three-point line, recording six assists and five rebounds as well. Ally Lehman (Nineveh, Ind./Indian Creek) set a new NIU record for double-digit rebound games in a season with her 18th of the year, registering 13 points and 12 rebounds for her 12th double-double. Cassidy Glenn (New Lenox, Ill./Providence Catholic) registered her first double-double of her career with 12 points and 11 rebounds, a new career-high.
Eastern Michigan applied the pressure early, playing a full-court press for the first quarter and a half of the game.
The Huskies broke the press with 3:50 left in the second quarter as Woods broke away down the court on a fast break layup, set up on a lob pass by Glenn. The layup by Woods started a 13-4 scoring run for the Huskies in the final 3:50, closing the gap to 19 points at the end of the half, 44-25.
Woods scored 10 points in her six minutes of action in the quarter, shooting 3-for-5 in the period.
"We didn't handle the press very well at all. We talked all week that any time we run into that kind of pressure that we couldn't attack with soft passes and that's where I think we got into trouble. I don't think we were aggressive enough. Eastern Michigan got their hands on a lot of balls that created offense for them," said Head Coach Lisa Carlsen.
Eastern Michigan got back into the press coming out of the halftime locker room, holding the NIU offense to 15 points in the third. The Huskies went 3-for-6 behind the three-point line in the frame as Woods hit two more treys and Lehman hit one. EMU's Sera Ozelci hit a three-pointer at the buzzer in front of her own bench to put the Eagles in charge, 63-40.
In the final period, the Huskies broke the press again, scoring 20 points in the quarter as Woods scored five more points, including her fifth trey of the afternoon to set a new career-high, 21 points.
Both Lehman and Glenn reached double-double status in the fourth, marking the first time since Feb. 4, 2015 versus Miami that NIU had two players record a double-double in the same game.
Eastern Michigan finished the game with a field goal percentage of 43.8 percent on 32-of-73 shooting with 10 baskets behind the arc and a perfect 10-of-10 at the free throw line. Four players reached double-figures.
NIU will return to action Wednesday, Feb. 24 when it heads to Western Michigan. The Huskies and Broncos will tipoff at 6 p.m. Central on ESPN3.
