BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Northern Illinois University gymnastics team scored a season-high 195.475 in its regular season finale at Bowling Green Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies also set a season best on the balance beam with a total event score of 49.000. Ashley Potts (Oakwood Hills, Ill./Prairie Ridge) led the Huskies with a 9.850 performance followed by two 9.825 scores from Andie Van Voorhis (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard) and Megan Greenfield (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South).

“Beam was finally able put it all together,” said NIU head coach Sam Morreale. “Props to them because it was a very loud arena. They did a really good job going in and finishing.”

NIU opened on uneven parallel bars where Potts led the Huskies with a first-place finish with a career-high 9.900. Jamyra Carter (Ypsilanti, Mich./Huron) earned second place with a 9.850.

Following the bars, the Huskies moved onto their second event of the day, vault. Andie Van Voorhis (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard) led the way for NIU with a 9.825 to finish third. Ally Ferber (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) and Courtney Dowdell (Lynwood, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) were right behind her, each scoring a 9.800. As a team, the Huskies scored a 48.450 on vault.

“Andie had a good meet coming back from injury,” Morreale said. “She had two solid events.”

The third event for the Huskies was floor where NIU earned its second event score over 49.000 of the afternoon. Freshman Anna Martucci (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) flourished once again, earning a 9.875 to place third. Ferber and Brittany Wenzel (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) were right behind Martucci each with 9.825 scores.

Bowling Green won the event, scoring a 196.500

Potts’ all-around score of 39.275 was good enough for 10th on NIU’s all-time list for all-around scores.

“She put four solid events together for us,” Morreale said of Potts. “She just had a solid meet everywhere.

“We’re peaking at the right time. I’m really excited about the direction we’re going. I just feel really good about this as our springboard into next weekend.”

NIU returns to action Saturday when the Huskies travel to Muncie, Ind. for the Mid-American Conference Championships. The meet begins at 1 p.m. CT.
