March 14, 2016

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Northern Illinois University men’s tennis team won for the second-straight day on its spring break trip as the Huskies defeated Quinnipiac, 6-1, on Monday afternoon in their final match before opening conference play.

The Huskies swept the doubles matches and took five of the six singles matchups to improve to 12-5 on the season.

“I’m really proud of our guys, we beat a good Quinnipiac team today,” said NIU head coach Patrick Fisher. “Carlos (Manzanas) and Louis (Hamel) led us from start to finish. Now it's on to a new season with conference play coming up, we're going to need all our guys to take another step forward.”

Sophomores Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) and Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) got the Huskies off to a good start with a 6-1 victory over Kei Ezaka and Kyle Apler at number three doubles.

NIU clinched the point as junior Carlos Manzanas (Madrid, Spain/IES Principe Felipe) and sophomore Austin Russell (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) topped Jonas Kuwert and Willem van Biezen at number one, 6-4. The Huskies finished a sweep of the doubles as Sophomore Kevin Daun (Vasteras, Sweden/Widenska Gymnasiet Idrottscollege) and Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun) bettered Luke Roser and Freddie Zaretsky, 6-4, at number two.

Manzanas cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at number one singles over Ezaka to give the Huskies their second point of the day. Russell took a straight sets win, 6-1, 6-1 over Apler at number six and Hamel clinched the win for NIU with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Zaretsky at number three.

Hjertonsson also picked up a straight sets win, downing Kuwert, 6-4, 7-5, at number four and Daun was also a winner, 7-5, 4-6, 10-5, over van Biezen at number five.
