CLEVELAND – The Mid-American Conference announced eight Northern Illinois University indoor track & field athletes to the Academic All-MAC team on Monday. The eight Huskies rank the second most honorees in school history after the 2015 team tallied nine.
The honor is given to student athletes who excel in both academics and athletics. In order to qualify, the student must record a 3.200 grade point average and have participated in at least half of the team's competitions for the season. Freshman and junior transfers are not eligible. The following Huskies earned the honor:
Maura Beattie, Junior, 3.895, English (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstoock)
Kedisha Dallas, Senior, 3.978, Communications (Ocho Rios, Jamaica/GC Foster)
Alexandria Isom, Senior, 3.920, Journalism (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall)
Alison Olson, Senior (Master's), 4.000, Sports Management (New Auburn, Wis./Bloomer)
Chennel Palmer, Junior, 3.306, Rehabilitation Services (Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew)
Hope Schmelzle, Senior, 4.000, Psychology (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South)
Ashley Sicard, Senior, 3.433, Pre-Family/Consumer & Nutrition Sciences (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling)
Logan Tillmon, Senior, 3.457, Communicative Disorders (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East)
All eight Huskies recorded career bests over the course of the indoor season including Schmelzle's two school records in the 800-meter and mile races. Her 2:08.67 800-meter time was achieved in February at the GVSU Big Meet while her mile time of 4:39.82 was set the following weekend at the Alex Wilson Invitational.
Tillmon earned the award for the fifth time in her career and was joined by two more repeat honorees in Olson and Sicard.
The Huskies will open the outdoor season this weekend as they compete in the North Carolina State University Raleigh Races on Friday and Saturday.
