Brock Hudkins Named to NWCA All-Academic Team

MANHEIM, Pa. – Northern Illinois University freshman wrestler Brock Hudkins was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic Team, announced by the NWCA on Tuesday.

The Danville, Indiana native wrapped up his first year as a Huskie with a 21-11 record; a third-place finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships; and a trip to the NCAA Championships, where he went 3-2 and fell just one win shy of claiming All-American status as a freshman. Hudkins carries a 3.571 GPA as a pre-physical therapy major and recently received the team's Freshman Academic Award, an honor bestowed to the freshman with the highest grade-point average.

"I am extremely proud of Brock Hudkins for garnering NWCA Academic All-American honors," said head wrestling coach Ryan Ludwig. "It is a very impressive display of the true student-athlete."

Awarded annually, the NWCA All-American team is comprised of 135 student-athletes. This year, the team includes four Division I national champions, as well as six runners-up. In all, 35 All-Americans were also All-Academic selections.

Of the 135 grapplers that make up the Academic All-American team, 115 wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships.  This mark is up from 101 NCAA qualifiers last season and an increase of 19 since the 2014-15 season.

Eight (of nine) MAC schools had at least one representative make the list.  Central Michigan led the conference with five. Hudkins was one of four 125-pounders in the MAC to receive the award.

Following a successful season, Coach Ludwig remains focused on the continued climb, "We intend to build on our momentum academically and athletically."  As Hudkins returns as a sophomore for the 2017-18 season, his leadership in the classroom and on the mats will be a key component for the Huskies.
