DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University gymnastics team hosts Ball State University on Sunday as they 'Stick It to Cancer' to honor cancer survivors, patients and caretakers. The meet will be held in Victor E. Court at the Convocation Center, beginning at 2 p.m.
"We're just trying to keep climbing," said NIU head coach
Sam Morreale. "We're happy with what we've done so far this season, but we all just feel like we've got a lot more in the tank. We are still just competing against ourselves, trying to get better each and every week. I told them, 'we're just trying to do what we've been doing the last couple weeks and nail down landings like we've been doing in practice."
In the last three meets, the Huskies have scored upwards of 195.000 points and are looking to capitalize on their progress in the coming weeks. NIU's streak started at Eastern Michigan (Feb. 9), where they outscored the Eagles, 195.425-194.900, to earn the highest team-overall score of the season. They followed up with two 195.025 scores at UIC (Feb. 11) and at the GymQuarters Invitational (Feb. 16).
In the Mid-American Conference, right now, six teams are fighting for the top as they are within one win of each other. Ball State is currently in second with two MAC wins under its belt, and NIU only being its third conference meet of the season.
The Huskies have recorded one win in the MAC so far this season, but is looking forward to the next two weekends, going up against the Cardinals as well as the Western Michigan Broncos (March 4) in back-to-back home meets.
"It will be great to be home for the next couple of weeks," Said Morreale. "We're back in conference play, and really just trying to better ourselves there. With Ball State, we seem to be hanging around the same ranking. It's not going to be easy for us these next few weeks."
Come out and support the gymnasts. Admission is free to all spectators. NIU will also be recognizing the Girl Scouts of America.
