Huskie Grapplers Finish Road Schedule in the Empire State

MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week Quinton Rosser leads the Huskies into the weekent

DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University wrestling team concludes the road portion of its season travelling to Vestal, N.Y. on Friday and Buffalo, N.Y., on Sunday to wrestle against Binghamton and Buffalo, respectively.  Action begins on Friday at 6 p.m. and on Sunday at 12 p.m. All times listed are Central.

The Huskies defeated Binghamton in the lone meeting, between the two schools, back in 2014, 27-13.

"Binghamton is a tough team and are having a really good season," said NIU head wrestling coach Ryan Ludwig. "We are looking forward to have some non-regional competition outside the conference this time of the year and it should be a good go for both programs."

NIU will face Mid-American Conference foe Buffalo for the 19th time with the Bulls edging the Huskies, 20-17, last season.  The Huskies have not defeated the Bulls since the 2014-15 season when NIU won, 26-10.

"Buffalo is a strong MAC opponent and we know each other relatively well," said Ludwig.  "They have some really tough individuals and they wrestle hard up and down the lineup.  We are looking for a good fight on Sunday."

MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week Quinton Rosser (Cincinnati, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) leads the way for NIU at 174. The Huskie redshirt-junior defeated Taylor Watkins of No. 3 Missouri, last Friday, 8-3.  Rosser is 10-13 this season and has 41 wins for his career.

"Quinton is a guy where when things go right for him, you feel really good," said Ludwig.  "This guy does everything right and carries a very strong GPA, just under 4.0 as a nursing major.  He leads the team by example in terms of work ethic, dedication, living right, and championship lifestyle; just an overall great human being.  Quinton Rosser puts a full effort forth on a daily basis, so for him to reap awards, it feels really good."

At 285, redshirt- sophomore Caleb Gossett (St. Charles, Mo./ Francis Howell Central) comes off a win against Wyatt Koelling of Missouri, 4-3, last Friday at Victor E. Court.  Gossett is tied for first on the team with Alijah Jeffery (Marion, Iowa/ Linn-Mar) with five dual wins.

The Huskies will face three ranked grapplers this weekend.  Binghamton will send No. 13 Steven Schneider to the mat at 184 against Bryce Gorman (Manhattan, Ill. / Lincoln- Way Central) or Michael Aldrich (St. Louis, Mo. / Parkway South) on Friday.  Buffalo will send out No. 15 Bryan Laundry at 133 against Alijah Jeffery (Marion, Iowa / Linn-Mar) and No. 20 Jake Gunning at 285 versus Caleb Gossett on Sunday.

Live scoring will be available through track wrestling for both duals.  Live streaming for Binghamton and Buffalo will be available.  Fans can also follow the Huskie grapplers on Twitter @NIUWrestling for this weekend's matchups and throughout the entire 2017-18 NIU wrestling season.
