DEKALB, IL – Riding the momentum of a solid victory the day before, the Northern Illinois University baseball team stayed hot with a 6-1 win over visiting NAIA opponent Trinity Christian College Wednesday afternoon at Ralph McKinzie Field.
Not even 24 hours after setting a season high in hits, the Huskies tied their best outburst with 15 hits, all while putting across all their runs in the first four innings.
"Great midweek set for us this week," Huskies' head coach
Mike Kunigonis said. "Getting the series' win against UIC and winning against a very good Trinity team was a great effort."
Junior RHP
William Anderson (Columbus, Ind./Columbus East) earned his first win of the season as he tossed six solid innings. He scattered six hits, and gave up only one run while striking out five and walking none.
"Will gave us a great start and controlled the game from his first pitch," Kunigonis said. "Our pen was solid and it was good to see our staff have success."
The Huskies used three other pitchers –
George Faue (Corcoan, Minn./Iowa Central),
Nate Thomas (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian) and
Andrew Frankenreider (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) – in the final three innings and the trio gave up nothing all while fanning a batter each.
NIU plated single runs in the first and second innings, and two in each the third and fourth. A
Jake Dunham (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) run-scoring single down the right field line put the Huskies in front 1-0, and
Josh Mutter's (Frankfort, Ill. /Lincoln-Way North) RBI groundout – his fifth RBI in the last two games – made it a 2-0 affair.
Kam Smith (Colonial Beach, Va./The Steward School) added to the Huskies' advantage in the third when he roped a two-run single to center field, allowing both
Scooter Bynum (Fairbanks, Alaska /Arizona Western College) and
Tommy Szczasny (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) to score. Szczasny and Dunham then finished up the offense with RBI singles in the fourth, plating
Samuel Vega (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Southwestern Junior College) and
Brad Wood (Orland Park, Ill./St. Laurence), respectively.
Of the 15 hits, Wood and Dunham had three each to lead the offense, while Vega, Szczasny, Smith and
Connor Montgomery (Newport Beach, Calif./Canyon) each had two.
"Thirty hits between two days is a nice way to get ready for a MAC weekend," Kunigonis said. "We need to keep the positive vibes going into Kent State."
NIU, which improves to 11-20 overall, travels to Kent, Ohio to take on the Golden Flashes for a three-game series starting Friday night at 5 p.m.
