IOWA CITY, IA – The Northern Illinois University baseball team suffered a hard-luck 2-0 loss to the host University of Iowa at Duane Banks Field Tuesday afternoon.
Although the Huskies were held to only one hit – a
Joe Jumonville (Munster, Ind./Munster) single to center field in the eighth inning – they did generate base runners via five walks and a hit by pitch, but couldn't come up with the key hit to get over the hump. With the loss, NIU moved to 11-24 overall and suffered their first loss in Tuesday games this season as they moved to 3-1.
"We faced a very good team that's very good on the mound," Huskies' head coach
Mike Kunigonis said. "Unfortunately our offense couldn't get anything going today."
Starting pitcher
Blake Walker (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) suffered the loss as he tossed three innings. He scattered five hits and gave up two earned runs while striking out three batters. Junior
William Anderson (Columbus, Ind./Columbus East) came on in relief and had the strongest outing of the Huskies hurlers as he fanned five batters in three innings of work.
Parker Kirkpatrick (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) and
Andrew Frankenreider (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) also tossed an inning of relief and didn't give up anything.
"Our pitchers did a great job and gave us an opportunity to win." Kunigonis said, "Just a hard luck loss today."
Iowa tallied all the offense it needed in the third inning as it plated runs on a sacrifice fly, and an RBI single.
"We need to have a couple of good days of practice to get ready for our [Mid-American Conference] series with Miami," Kunigonis said.
The Huskies host the Redhawks for a three-game set at Ralph McKinzie Field beginning Friday, weather permitting, at 3 p.m. Â
