MILWAUKEE, WI – The Northern Illinois University baseball team travels to the University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin for doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Originally scheduled as a single game but switched to a twin bill of two seven-inning contests due to a cancellation earlier in the season, the Huskies hope to improve their record to 5-1 against Horizon League opponents this season.
NIU took two of three from host Bowling Green State University over the weekend at Steller Field, in earning their third win in the last four games.
"These should be two good cross state line rivalry games against a very good UWM team," Huskies' head coach
Mike Kunigonis said. "We need to continue our momentum into this week and finish out the regular season strong."
At Bowling Green, the Huskies averaged seven runs and 14 hits per game over the three-game set. Collectively NIU carried a .350 batting average with nine extra base hits, including two home runs and a .458 slugging percentage.
Red shirt freshman
Kam Smith (Colonial Beach, Va./The Steward School) led the offense with seven hits in 13 at-bats for a .538 batting average and five RBI. Senior
Samuel Vega (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Southwestern Junior College) followed with a .500 batting average and his third home run of the season as part of the Huskies' 12-4 triumph in the series' finale Sunday.
Pitching-wise, Huskie hurlers struck out 20 batters and held the Falcons to a .282 batting average with only five extra base hits. They also carried a staff earned run average of under four and yielded only eight walks over 28 innings pitched.
Tuesday's matchups will be the fifth and sixth meetings between the programs in the last three seasons. The Panthers own a 3-1 record with NIU's only victory being a 7-3 triumph May 17, 2016 in Milwaukee. Senior RHP
Donovin Sims (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community) will start Game 1 of the DH with sophomore RHP
Blake Walker (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) taking the mound in the second game.
