DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University gymnastics and wrestling teams will come together Sunday to compete side-by-side on the floor of the NIU Convocation Center in the annual "Beauty and the Beast" Meet. Admission is free and fans are invited to come in out of the cold to enjoy this unusual event featuring non-stop action beginning at 1 p.m.
The Huskie gymnastics team (4-2, 1-1 MAC) takes on Bowling Green and UIC, while the wrestling team will battle Ohio in its final home meet of the season.
The Beauty and the Beast meet is the midpoint of a three-week homestand for NIU gymnastics as they are coming off last Friday's victory over Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan. In that meet, NIU recorded its highest score of the season with a 194.675, led by the beam team which posted a season-best total of 48.900.
Sophomore
Mia Lord led the Huskies' efforts on beam as she scored a season and career best 9.875 on the event, while
Catherine Biddle added a 9.800. Through three meets, senior
Anna Martucci has continued to excel on floor exercise with a 9.850 average to date, while junior
Amanda Bartemio has been consistent across all three of her events with a 9.708 mark on vault, a 9.725 on uneven parallel bars and a 9.775 on floor exercise.
As a team, the Huskies have been consistent across all four events, led by the team's 48.692 mark on floor exercise. NIU's beam mark is at 48.583 and its vault average is 48.508.
Following Sunday's Tri-Meet, NIU closes out the homestand on Friday, February 1 with a Quadrangular Meet versus Kent State, Seattle Pacific and Lindenwood. That meet begins at 6 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
