DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team plays for its fifth consecutive win on Wednesday when it travels to Toledo to take on the Rockets at Savage Arena. Tip-off is at 4:30 p.m. with the game broadcast available on WLBK 98.9 FM/1360 AM in DeKalb, as well as on TuneIn and the new NIU Huskies app.
NIU (6-5, 4-2 MAC) is 4-0 in the month of January after an 87-79 win at Miami last Saturday. Sophomore guard
Chelby Koker (Racine, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) led the Huskies with a career-high 29 points, going 10-for-12 from the free throw line. It was her sixth 20-point effort of the season. Koker is fifth in the MAC in scoring at 20.3 points per game and second in free throw percentage at 91.2, which puts her 24
th in the nation.
Junior forward
Mikayla Brandon (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) had her second double-double of the season at Miami with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. It was her fifth game this season with double-digit rebounds. In the last four games, Brandon is averaging 10.5 points and 10 rebounds per game while shooting 46.7 percent from the field and 50 percent from the three-point line.
The Huskies currently lead the MAC in three-point field goal percentage (39.1 percent) and three-point field goal percentage defense (27.7 percent). NIU has held each of its last five opponents under 26 percent from the three-point line. It has also made double-digit threes in each of the last three games with 15 against Central Michigan on Jan. 13 and 10 in the win at Miami last Saturday. The Huskies are fifth in the nation with 10.6 three-pointers per game and 11
th in three-point field goal percentage.
Toledo (7-4, 3-4 MAC) has won three of the last four meetings against NIU, including an 82-79 win at the NIU Convocation Center on Dec. 10. The Rockets are 3-4 in league play following a 69-57 loss to Bowling Green Saturday. Quinesha Lockett led Toledo with 21 points against the Falcons as Tatyana Davis had 11 points off the bench. The Rockets are fourth in the MAC in both scoring defense at 67.7 points allowed per game and field goal percentage defense at 40 percent.
Following Wednesday's game, NIU hosts Kent State on Saturday, Jan. 23. Tip-off is at 1 p.m. with the game being broadcast on ESPN+.
