EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University wrestling team took second place at the six-team Cougar Clash Saturday as Huskies Mason Kauffman and Brit Wilson won their respective weight classes.
 
NIU finished with 129.5 points, second only to Wisconsin's 192.5 and ahead of Brown (111.5), Little Rock (111.0), host SIU Edwardsville (110.5) and Bellarmine (71.0).
 
Wilson recorded a pair of falls en route to the first-place match, pinning Darian Huff of Bellarmine just 1:17 into the match, then taking down Tyler Dow of Wisconsin at the 6:17 mark. Wilson defeated a second Badger wrestler, Chris Weiler, 8-4, in the final to win the 184 pound weight class.
 
Kauffman won the 174-pound weight class, defeating Kevin Gschwendtner of SIU-E, 8-5 in the semifinals and Triston Wills of Little Rock, 3-2, in the finals.
 
Huskies Bryce West (125) and Izzak Olejnik (165) each took second place in the tournament.  West advanced to the finals with wins over Brown's Reese Fry and Bellarmine's Jack Parker, both by fall. He lost to Wisconsin's Eric Barnett by major decision, 13-5, in the finals. Olejnik earned wins by major decision in the quarterfinals – 9-0 over Cody Anderson of Wisconsin - and semifinals, defeating Tyler Brennan of Little Rock 11-0.  Dean Hamiti of Wisconsin pinned Olejnik to take the title at 165.
 
Three more NIU wrestlers finished third.  Also wrestling at 125 pounds, Lucian Brink came back after a first round defeat to win a pair of matches, including the third-place match against Little Rock's Jaylen Carson, who he had lost to earlier in the day. At 133, NIU's Mikey Kaminski won three matches after dropping his first-round match-up to Little Rock's Jayden Carson, beating Carson in the third-place match 3-2. 
 
Anthony Gibson was third at 157 with a win over Chase Tebbets of Little Rock in the third-place match.
 
NIU is next in action at the Huskie Duals on December 18 when the Huskies play host to Kent State and Harper College in the NIU Convocation Center.
