DEKALB, Ill. – After launching for the 2021 spring semester, the Northern Illinois University Student Athlete Mentor Program will begin its first full year of operation in 2021-22 and is currently looking for Huskie Athletics alums to join the program.
Designed to bring together current and former NIU student-athletes, the program seeks to provide current Huskies with support and guidance from an individual who has gone through a similar journey as a Division I student-athlete. The program allows mentees the opportunity to grow, personally and professionally, while mentors are given a platform to offer guidance to current student-athletes from their perspective.
During its initial launch, the program included over 30 student-athletes matches with alumni mentors and is looking to expand further for the 2021-22 school year. Mentors and mentees are matches based on their sport, major, professional career and location.
The deadline to apply to participate in the program for the 2011-22 academic year is July 31. A special kickoff event will be held with student-athlete mentees and their alumni mentors on Saturday, September 11 prior to the Huskie football game against Wyoming.
