LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Northern Illinois University wrestling team split its two duals at Little Rock on Sunday, defeating the host Trojans 35-6 after a 28-6 loss to Cal Poly earlier in the day.
"We were pleased to get some our guys back in the lineup," said head coach
Ryan Ludwig. "We got some good wins today and learned more about some guys we might see in March."
NIU (5-8) got off to a fast start against Little Rock, winning five of the first six matches.
Bryce West (Solon, Iowa/Solon) put the first three points on the board for the Huskies with a 5-3 win at 125 pounds over Jayden Carson. After the Trojans tied the dual at 3-3,
Jaivon Jones (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Nordonia) earned a 4-1 decision victory at 141 to make the score 6-3.
Anthony Cheloni (South Elgin, Ill./Marmion Academy) followed with a 7-4 win at 149 to give NIU a 9-3 lead.
The Huskies then got bonus points victories at 157 via forfeit and at 165 on Izzak Olejnik's (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) 9-0 major decision win over Tyler Brennan that put NIU up 19-3.
Brit Wilson (Mexico, Mo./Mexico) won by fall at 184 pounds and
Tristin Guaman (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) earned an 11-3 major decision win at 197. Little Rock forfeited the final match to make the final score 35-6.
Michael Kaminski (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) went 1-1 on the day with a narrow 7-6 win over Abe Hinrichsen of Cal Poly in NIU's first dual of the day.
Anthony Gibson (Westland, Mich./John Glenn) earned a 10-4 decision over Brawley Lamer at 157 pounds.
NIU head to Buffalo on Saturday, Feb. 5 for a Mid-American Conference dual against the Bulls at 12 p.m. CT.
