DeKALB, Ill. – Northern Illinois University sophomore
Anastasia Rakita was named the Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis Singles Player of the Week after posting a 3-0 record last week as the MAC announced its weekly honors on Friday.
Rakita helped the Huskies go 3-1 in four matches last weekend. On Friday, she earned a comeback three-set win over South Dakota's Estella Jaeger (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) at No. 3 singles to tie the match 2-2. Later that day, she defeated Cassandra Lee of Wisconsin-Whitewater (6-1, 6-3) at No. 2 singles in a 7-0 NIU win. On Sunday, she defeated Katarina Drazic of Chicago State (6-3, 6-3) to clinch the win for the Huskies. Rakita was also a part of two doubles wins for NIU over the weekend. She is 10-5 in singles during the dual match season to date.
The Moscow native has also been honored twice this season with doubles partner
Erika Dimitriev as the MAC Doubles Team of The Week. She is the third Huskie player to earn MAC Singles recognition this year as freshman
Reagan Welch (Feb. 8) and sophomore
Diana Lukyanova (Feb. 15) earned the award earlier this season.
NIU (11-5) is off this weekend before opening MAC play versus Bowling Green on Sunday, March 20. The Huskies were picked fifth in the preseason poll of MAC coaches.
