Women's Tennis | April 27
DeKALB, Ill. – Northern Illinois University senior
Christy Robinson was named the Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis Singles Player of the Week after clinching both of NIU's 4-3 wins as the Huskies closed out their 2021-22 season over the weekend.
Robinson helped the Huskies secure the win on Friday against Ball State as she earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over BSU's Isabelle Behrman. On Sunday, she played a 2:36 match with WMU's Maya Perkucin, taking the first set tiebreaker 7-2 and dropping the second set 3-6 before coming back from 4-3 down in the third set to win 6-4.
The New Zealand native is the fourth Huskie this season to earn the MAC weekly honor as freshman
Reagan Welch (Feb. 8), and sophomores
Diana Lukyanova (Feb. 15) and
Anastasia Rakita (March 11) previously were named MAC Singles Player of the Week. Additionally, Robinson was honored last week with
Fernanda Naves as MAC Doubles Team of the Week (April 20). The Huskie duo of
Anastasia Rakita and
Erika Dimitriev also earned the MAC weekly doubles award twice earlier in the season (Feb. 8 and 23), giving the Huskies seven weekly award winners in 2022.
With its wins over Ball State and Western Michigan in the final weekend, NIU finished the season 17-11 overall, 4-6 in the MAC. The Huskies finished fifth in the league standings, just one spot shy of qualifying for the postseason tournament. NIU won its last three dual matches, all by 4-3 scores, and won four of its last five matches overall.
The Huskies' 43 dual match wins over the past three seasons – including 12 wins prior to the COVID-19 shutdown in spring 2020 – are the most over a three-year stretch for the NIU women's tennis program since 1984-86 when the Huskies accumulated 47 wins under Cary (1984) and then Patty (1985, 1986) Groth.
