DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University men's golf team had three student-athletes named as Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America this week.
Graduate Student
Michael Cascino (Palos Park, Ill./Providence Catholic/Butler), senior
Tommy Dunsire (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) and junior
Zach Place (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) earned the national honor, adding on to their selections to the Mid-American Conference Academic All-MAC Team for this past season.
To be eligible for an All-America Scholar nomination, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically, participate in 50 percent of their team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 for NCAA Division I, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2.
Place carries a 3.528 grade point average in entrepreneurship and social responsibility. Dunsire is a marketing major with a 3.256 GPA. Cascino majored in Management Information Systems and carried a 3.33 GPA.
Cascino was named an All-American Scholar for the second time in his career. He earned the award in 2019 at Butler. Cascino was the Huskies' top finisher in three events last season, tying for 15
th at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate hosted by Ohio State in April with a one-over par 54-hole score of 215. He placed in the top 30 three times.
Dunsire had four top-30 finishes this past season, tying for 15
th at the MAC Championship. He carded a five-under par 67 in the opening round of the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate last October, and placed in 26
th place. Dunsire was third on the team in scoring average at 74.45. Place led NIU with a top-10 finish at the MAC Championship as the Huskies tied for third. He finished in the top-30 five times in the 2021-22 season. Place had a top-20 showing at the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate. This is the first Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar honor for both Dunsire and Place.
"Division I All-America Scholars are only awarded to the finest student-athletes in our sport," said head coach
John Carlson. "Michael, Tommy and Zach earned this distinction in the classroom and on the course. Our coaching staff, as well as their teammates, witness their individual accountability, leadership and dedication to NIU Golf on a daily basis."
This is the second time NIU has had three All-America Scholars in a single year. In 2018 Joo-Young Lee, Thomas DeMarco and Salvador Rocha each earned the honor.
