ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Northern Illinois University golf team finished the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate Saturday, hosted by New Mexico at the UNM Championship Course, in 17th place.
Sophomore
Ben Sluzas (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) was the Huskies' top finisher for the second straight tournament, tying for 45th place with a 54-hole score of six-over par 222. Sluzas carded a six-over par 78 in Friday's opening round, then moved up 25 spots on the leaderboard to 60th after an even par 72 in round two. He carded another 72 on Saturday, making another move 15 spots up the leaderboard.
Campbell Wolf (Mechanicsburg, Pa./DePaul) tied for 54th place, finishing his NIU debut at seven-over par with a 54 hole score of 223. Wolf had the Huskies' lowest score in round one with a two-over par 74. He had six birdies in his second round but still managed a 74. Wolf posted a score of 75 in the final round Saturday.
NIU finished with a team score of 38-over par 902, three strokes ahead of Loyola Marymount. San Diego State won the tournament by eight strokes over the host Lobos.
"The UNM Championship Course played difficult for all teams this weekend despite perfect weather conditions," said head coach
John Carlson. "The firm greens and four-inch rough put a premium on driving the ball in the fairway. We didn't execute as a team, both off the tee and into the greens."
The Huskies are next in action Oct. 2-3 at the Marquette Intercollegiate, hosted by Marquette at Milwaukee Country Club.
