DeKALB, Illinois – Shawn Lowe, a fixture in the DeKalb-Sycamore community with strong connections to local media and civic organizations and events, will join Northern Illinois University Athletics as the Huskies' assistant athletic director for Convocation Center marketing, NIU Vice President and Director of Athletics and Recreation
Sean T. Frazier announced Thursday.
Lowe, who comes to NIU from radio station 94-9 WDKB in DeKalb where he serves as the brand manager, sales associate and on-air personality, will be responsible for promoting and marketing NIU Athletics venues with emphasis on the NIU Convocation Center. His focus in that role will be on attracting and booking non-athletic events to generate revenue and promote NIU and the DeKalb/Sycamore community. In addition to booking the events, he will have oversight of all elements associated with conducting the events, including marketing, promotion and fiscal management. His duties will include managing the social media accounts and NIU Convocation Center website.
"Shawn is a great addition to our team here at NIU as he brings longstanding ties to the community and local events, as well as a vast knowledge of the entertainment world," Frazier said. "We are excited about what he can bring to the marketing and promotion efforts of the NIU Convocation Center as we work to bring even more events to the community."
Lowe's experience in the region's media market dates back to 1993 as a weekend show host in DeKalb at 92.5 WDEK. He worked in Rockford as an on-air personality with Townsquare Media beginning in 1999. Since 2009, he has worked in DeKalb and Rochelle, including stints as an account executive for the Daily Chronicle (2009-16), as a disc jockey and sales team member for 102.3 The Coyote in Rochelle (2016) and, since 2018 with 94-9 WDKB, a Midwest Family Broadcasting station.
Since 1993, he has also owned and operated Prosound Productions, a professional DJ, marketing and events business through which he has assisted local organizations and festivals with a wide range of services, including selecting and contracting bands and national artists, providing contract and volunteer security and event staff and managed festival schedules. Locally, Lowe has served as associate producer/director of the CornFest Sound Stage since 2003 and is a member of the CornFest Board of Directors.
His community commitment led him to be named the DeKalb Chamber Ambassador of the Year in 2020, the Heartland Bank Heart of the Community Award Winner in 2021 and the Kishwaukee United Way Leo Olson Award Winner. He is a member of the DeKalb Chamber Board of Directors and the Board of Directors of Tails Humane Society. In 2021, 94-9 WDKB was named the Business of the Year by the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce.
"Words cannot express how excited I am to be joining the team at the NIU Convocation Center to help bring some great entertainment back to our area," Lowe said. "I am also grateful to the team at Midwest Family Broadcasting/94.9 WDKB for allowing me to stay on as host of the Morning Show and to continue doing what I love. Music has always been a huge part of my life and now I get to continue doing what I am very passionate about with two great DeKalb County assets."
Lowe, who begins at NIU on Monday, October 3, will continue his role as morning show host at 94-9 WDKB, the flagship station for the Huskie Sports Network.
