CLEVELAND – Seven Huskies of the Northern Illinois University wrestling team were tabbed to the 2023 Mid-American Conference Academic All-MAC team, the league announced Tuesday.
"We are proud of the way these guys pursue greatness in their studies; they are students first," said head NIU coach
Ryan Ludwig. "Success in the classroom spills over into all their pursuits."
Bryce West (Solon, Iowa/Solon) earned his fourth Academic All-MAC selection while
Izzak Olejnik (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) earned his third.
Multiple Huskies make their inaugural appearances on the Academic All-MAC team:
Anthony Gibson (Westland, Mich./John Glenn) and
Lucian Brink (Coshocton, Ohio/Coshocton) makes their debuts as upperclassmen.
Blake West (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee),
Hayden Pummel (Indian Lake, Ohio/Indian Lake), and
Jacob Christensen (Durham, Calif./Durham) earn the plaudit in their first year eligible.

To qualify for the Academic All-MAC Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests scheduled or completed in the particular sport. First-year students and ANY transfer in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season only are considered.
