Women's Basketball | August 1
DeKALB, IL - The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team had the third-highest team grade point average in NCAA Division I in the 2022-23 academic year according to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, which released its Academic Top 25 Honor Roll Tuesday.
Â
The Huskies had a cumulative team GPA of 3.778 last year, behind only Albany (3.791) and Robert Morris (3.801) for the top GPA in Division I. This is the third consecutive year NIU has been in the top 10 of the WBCA Division I Academic Top 25. NIU was seventh in the 2020-21 year and ninth in the 2021-22 year. It is also the fifth straight season the Huskies have been on the WBCA Academic Top 25 Honor Roll.
Â
"Achievement in the classroom is a big part of our program's culture," said head coach
Lisa Carlsen. "Our team has set a high bar for academic success and has continually raised it year after year. To have the third-highest GPA in NCAA Division I women's basketball shows just how hard our team works in the classroom. I'm extremely proud of our student-athletes for reaching our highest ranking in the WBCA Academic Top 25."
Â
NIU had a program-record nine selections to the Mid-American Conference Academic All-MAC Team. Four of those student-athletes -
A'Jah Davis (DeKalb, Ill.),
Chelby Koker (Racine, Wis.),
Jayden Marable (Bolingbrook, Ill.) and
Laura Nickel (Marshall, Wis.) - were selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team in February. It was the sixth consecutive season NIU had at least six student-athletes selected to the Academic All-MAC team.
Â
The Huskies are joined by Kent State as MAC schools in the 2023 WBCA Academic Top 25 Honor Roll.
Â
The WBCA Academic Top 25 recognizes NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA and two-year college women's basketball teams across the country that carry the highest combined GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season.
