Wrestling | January 17
DeKALB, Ill.—Northern Illinois University's
Blake West was named the MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week as announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
West, a redshirt-sophomore from Shakopee, Minnesota (Shakopee), improved to 19-5 on the season after defeating Ohio's Ryan Meek in action last week. The Huskies posted a 24-15 victory over the Bobcats, the first win in DeKalb since the 2006-07 season.
West won by a major decision (12-0) over Meek for his third major decision win of the season. In dual competitions, West is undefeated with a 10-0 overall record and a 3-0 conference record.
West is a chemistry major, carrying a 3.834 grade point average. The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week Award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete from a conference school each week, based on both grade point average and their performance in competition during the week. West is the first NIU wrestler to earn the award this year.
The Huskies return to the mat on January 19, as they travel to Cleveland State. Action is set to get underway at 6 p.m. (CT).
