EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team saw success in both singles and doubles at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Michigan State from Thursday, Oct. 10 through Monday, Oct. 14.  
 
The Huskies competed in doubles on Thursday and Friday where the duo of Saul Berdullas (Santiago de Compostela, Spain) and Sam Klein (Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield East) performed very well and advanced to the Round of 16.
 
"Co-Captain Saul and Sam's doubles skills are highly complementary. With their chemistry and ability to work together, we are excited about what they will continue to do for Huskie Tennis," NIU head coach René Vidal said.
 
In singles, Iker Gaztmabide Arrastia (Pamplona, Spain) won three matches in the main consolation and advanced to the semifinals.
 
"Co-Captain Iker's work ethic and focus are starting to pay off as he develops into one of the top players in the country," Vidal said. "More great things are in store for Iker and our team."
 
Berdullas and Klein earned two wins in the doubles competition. They first took down the duo of Remi St-Laurent and Tristian Ryerson from Marquette, 8-1, in the Round of 64. The Huskie duo then took down the #8 ranked pairing of Christopher Li and Alexander Bernard from Ohio State by a score of 8-7 [7-4] to advance to the Round of 16.  The NIU tandem fell in the Round of 16 to the #16 ranked duo of Daniel Rakhmatullayev and Taym Alazmeh from Michigan State.
 
In singles play, Arrastia fell to David Saye of Michigan State to open the tournament by a score of 7-6 [8-6], 6-4 before bouncing back to make a deep run in the consolation tournament.
 
In the consolation Round of 32, Arrastia started his run by taking down Alex Fuchs of Ohio State 7-6 [6-5], 6-4. He then defeated Jameson Corsillo from Notre Dame in commanding fashion 6-4, 6-3.
 
In the quarterfinal round on Sunday, Arrastia then took down another member of the Fighting Irish with a competitive 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 win in the third set tiebreak.  Arrastia advanced to play on the final day of the tournament in the semifinal where #14 Yu Zhang of Notre Dame ended Arrastia's strong outing.
 
Across the rest of the tournament, Chao Bo Suo Nan (Taiwan) defeated Ty Rothschild of Cleveland State in three sets by a score of 6-2, 6-7 [7-9], 7-5 to advance to the singles qualifying draw Round of 32. Nan fell 6-3, 6-1 to Collin Beduhn of Wisconsin in that contest.
 
In doubles play, Angus Howard (Bath, England/Texas Permian Basin) and Federico Scotuzzi (Bergamo, Italy) defeated Reece Yakubov and JP Day of Ohio State by a score of 8-4. Howard and Scotuzzi then faced the #1 ranked duo of Gavin Young and Benjamin Kittay from Michigan and came up short in an 8-4 defeat.
 
The Huskies will be back in action from Thursday, Oct. 24 to Sunday, Oct. 27 when they compete at the MAC Indoor Championships hosted by Western Michigan.
