Four Huskies Named to Academic All-MAC Team

Cleveland, Ohio - Four members of the Northern Illinois University men's tennis team were named to the Academic All-MAC team by the Mid-American Conference on Monday.

To qualify, athletes must meet a GPA threshold of 3.20 and compete in 50 percent of matches.  First-year players, including transfers in their first season and true freshmen, are not eligible for the team.

All three of NIU's seniors - Mikael Vollbach (Rothis, Austria), Armin Koschtojan (Halle (Saale, Germany) and Cheng En Tsai (Taipei, Taiwan) - received the honors from the MAC.

Sophomore Christopher Norlin also made the Academic All-MAC team for NIU.

"I couldn't be prouder of each of these guys for their commitment to academic excellence," head coach René Vidal said. "It's not easy balancing top-level athletics, classes, and a healthy social life. What an amazing accomplishment individually and for Huskie Tennis."

Vollbach earned a 4.0 GPA in business administration. He earned the Academic All-MAC honors for the fourth time in his NIU career. Vollbach was named to the All-MAC First Team in 2024 and also received MAC All-Tournament First Team Honors this season. He posted a 14-9 singles record this season and a 15-8 doubles record.

Koschtojan earned a 3.928 GPA in business administration to qualify for the Academic All-MAC team for the third time He went 13-8 in 2024 while competing mainly at No. 5 singles and at No. 2 doubles with Saul Berdullas (Santiago de Compostela, Spain)

Tsai earned a 3.267 GPA in sport management to earn Academic All-MAC honors in 2024. Tsai was also named First Team All-MAC after he went 15-6 while competing 20 times at No. 1 singles. He also earned a 15-8 doubles record with Vollbach at No. 1 doubles.

Norlin posted a 3.279 GPA in business administration to qualify for the Academic All-MAC team in his first year of eligibility. Norlin earned a 10-5 singles record this season and a 14-2 record at No. 3 doubles with Iker Gaztambide Arrastia (Pamplona,
Spain).
