Men's Golf | June 3

DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University men's golf team had three student-athletes named to the Mid-American Conference's Men's Golf Academic All-MAC Team on Monday (June 3). Ben Sluzas (Lockport, Ill./Lockport), Zach Place (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) and Ian Bruchhauser (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) all earned the academic honor.
 
"Ben, Zach and Ian are all deserved recipients of Academic All-MAC honors," said head coach John Carlson. "They have excelled as student-athletes at NIU both in the classroom and on the golf course."
 
Place earned the honor for the fourth consecutive season. He was the MAC Golfer of the Week on Oct. 12 after leading NIU with a fourth-place finish at the Purdue Fall Invitational. Place posted a career-low 54-hole score of six-under par 207. It was his second top-10 finish of the fall after he tied for 10^th at the VCU Shootout, where he shot a career-low 66 in the second round.
 
Sluzas was named to the Academic All-MAC Team for the second straight year. The junior led NIU with a 72.121 scoring average and earned All-MAC Second Team honors. His scoring average is the second-lowest in program history. Sluzas had three top-10 finishes and two top-20 finishes this season. He carded a career-low nine-under par 209 at the VCU Shootout to tie for sixth place and earn MAC Co-Golfer of the Week honors.
 
Bruchhauser earned his first Academic All-MAC selection. The sophomore played in 10 of 11 tournaments this season with three top-25 finishes. He led NIU with a third-place finish at the MAC Championship. Bruchhauser carded rounds of 68 and a career-best 66 on the final two days to finish with a 54-hole score of seven-under par 209.
 
This is the sixth consecutive year NIU has had at least three Academic All-MAC selections.
 
To qualify for the Academic All-MAC Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests scheduled. Freshmen and first year transfer students are not eligible.
