Men's Tennis | January 17
West Lafayette, Ind. – The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team opened their 2025 season against Purdue on Friday, Jan. 17. The Boilermakers defeated the Huskies 7-0.
"We competed with great energy from start to finish," head coach René Vidal said. "In doubles, we were right there and the scores in singles don't reflect how competitive we were individually. Our focus is now on our next match."
In doubles Purdue claimed the first point of the dual. At #1 doubles
Iker Gaztambide Arrastia (Pamplona, Spain) and NIU newcomer
Federico Scotuzzi (Bergamo, Italy/North Alabama) were tied 5-5 at the time of doubles play being called.
In singles play 2023 MAC Freshman of the Year
Saul Berdullas (Santiago de Compostela, Spain) highlighted Huskie's singles play as he took the second set and 6-4. Berdullas fell 4-6, 6-4, 3-10 in the third set tiebreaker.
"We fought really hard until the last point," NIU's co-captains Arrastia and Berdullas said. "Proud of the team for the great energy we had and tomorrow we will bounce back to finish strong the weekend."
The Huskies will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 18 when the Huskies travel to Indianapolis to take on IU Indy.
