Kalamazoo, Mich. – The Northern Illinois University gymnastics team scored a season high and earned second place at Sunday's meet against Western Michigan and Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Kiera O'Shea (Norridge, Ill./Ridgewood) won on the vault for the seventh consecutive time and posted a new season high of 9.900.
The Huskies score of 194.450 was higher than the NIU's previous high of 193.550 set in last week's SEMO Tri-Meet.
"I just feel like we're competing well," head coach Nita Teague said." "They're just settling into the competition and doing more of what we do in the gym. Still have some room for improvement, but we're super happy with the direction that we're going right now."
The host Broncos won with a 195.300 while Wisconsin-Whitewater scored 193,400.
NIU was also highlighted by a second-place beam finish from
Ellery Werner (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) who earned second place with a 9.775.
Drake White scored a new career high on vault with a 9.850 and earned second place.
"Seven straight wins by Kiera is ridiculous and very impressive.," Teague said. Drake also stuck an outstanding vault today."
The Huskies opened the meet on bars where the Huskies were led by a pair of freshmen.
Aliyah Kelly and
Katie Ferguson both scored 9.800. O'Shea added a 9.725 and
Drake White scored a 9.700.
"Aliyah and Katie, our two freshman both did an outstanding job on bars to lead the way for us," Teague said."
In the second rotation the Huskies moved to beam. NIU was led by
Ellery Werner with a 9.775.
Isabella Ross and
Dawsyn Sallee both added scores of 9.725.
Ross scored a 9.750 on floor to lead the way for NIU. Sallee and O'Shea scored a 9.725.
Samantha Nickle put up a score of 9.700 as well.
After impressive performances by O'Shea and White earned first and second place Sallee added a 9.775 and Harbeck scored a 9.750.
The Huskies will be back in action at 12 p.m. on Sunday, March 2 at Ball State. After that meet the Huskies will return home to the NIU Convocation Center for the final time in 2025 at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 9 against Bowling Green.
