DeKALB, IL – Senior guard
Maria Serracanta (Sabadell, Spain/Mercer) of the Northern Illinois University women's basketball team was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team on Tuesday, the second postseason honor for the Huskies this season.
"Earning CSC Academic All-District honors is a testament to the discipline, commitment and character Maria brings each and every day," said head coach
Jacey Brooks. "What she has accomplished in the classroom matches the excellence we see on the court and we couldn't be prouder of her."
Serracanta currently holds a 3.98 grade point average in kinesiology. She led the Mid-American Conference this season with a 2.00 assist/turnover ratio which put her 40
th in the nation. Serracanta was also eighth in the league with 3.9 assists per game. The senior point guard had at least five assists in a game 10 times this season.
On Dec. 7 Serracanta led NIU with a career-high 16 points at then-#10 Iowa State. She recorded her first career double-double in the Huskies' win over Eastern Michigan on Feb. 28 with 12 points and a career-high 11 assists.
Outstanding student-athletes are nominated for Academic All-District recognition by communications directors and must have a minimum 3.50 GPA and meet high athletic standards.
