NIU Men’s Golf Adds St. Charles East Standout Alex Wagner To
2005 Recruiting Class
DeKalb, IL –Northern Illinois University men’s golf coach
John Cleary announced the signing of St. Charles East High School
standout Alex Wagner to a national letter of intent on Tuesday (Nov.
16).
A key member
of St. Charles East’s second-place team at the 2004-05 Illinois
High School Association Class AA State Championship, Wagner burst
onto the scene over the summer, where he qualified for the United
States Golf Association Junior Amateur at the Olympic Club in San
Francisco, CA. Although he fell in the early rounds, Wagner qualified
for the event after shooting a two-round 142 in the local qualifier
at Kishwaukee Country Club in DeKalb, IL.
“We are
excited that Alex Wagner will be a part of NIU and the men's golf
program,” head coach John Cleary said. “He had an excellent
summer of tournaments and played very well in leading his team to
a second-place finish at the IHSA State Championship. He is an excellent
student and has the desire and drive to perform well in the classroom
and on the golf course.”
It addition
to qualifying for the USGA Junior-Am, Wagner qualified for the Illinois
Junior Golf Association’s Junior Amateur Championship and was
the medalist at the IHSA Sectional at Glencoe Golf Course, shooting
an even-par 72 before winning in a three-person playoff.
Wagner will
enroll at NIU next fall and will be a freshman for Cleary’s
team during the 2005-06 season.
