NIU Men’s Golf Adds St. Charles East Standout Alex Wagner To 2005 Recruiting Class

DeKalb, IL –Northern Illinois University men’s golf coach John Cleary announced the signing of St. Charles East High School standout Alex Wagner to a national letter of intent on Tuesday (Nov. 16).

A key member of St. Charles East’s second-place team at the 2004-05 Illinois High School Association Class AA State Championship, Wagner burst onto the scene over the summer, where he qualified for the United States Golf Association Junior Amateur at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, CA. Although he fell in the early rounds, Wagner qualified for the event after shooting a two-round 142 in the local qualifier at Kishwaukee Country Club in DeKalb, IL.

“We are excited that Alex Wagner will be a part of NIU and the men's golf program,” head coach John Cleary said. “He had an excellent summer of tournaments and played very well in leading his team to a second-place finish at the IHSA State Championship. He is an excellent student and has the desire and drive to perform well in the classroom and on the golf course.”

It addition to qualifying for the USGA Junior-Am, Wagner qualified for the Illinois Junior Golf Association’s Junior Amateur Championship and was the medalist at the IHSA Sectional at Glencoe Golf Course, shooting an even-par 72 before winning in a three-person playoff.

Wagner will enroll at NIU next fall and will be a freshman for Cleary’s team during the 2005-06 season.
