NIU Women's Basketball Team Plays Host To No. 17 Bowling Green

DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team welcomes No. 17 Bowling Green to the Convocation Center Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Bowling Green will be the first ranked opponent to visit the Convo since the Huskies lost to then-No. 4 Notre Dame on Dec. 30, 2004.

The game, which will air as part of the Mid-American Conference's Game of the Week package may be seen on Comcast Sportsnet Chicago, FSN Ohio, Comcast Local and Time Warner in New York in an estimated 10 million homes. WGN's Dave Kaplan and Brooke Weisbrod call the game.

The Huskies come into Saturday's contest after falling to Kent State, 78-71 Wednesday at the MAC Center. Foul trouble and turnovers plagued the Huskies (15-7, 6-4). Mary Basic, Stephanie Raymond and Kristin Wiener fouled out of the game. The Huskies committed a season-high 26 turnovers, and Kent State (12-9, 8-2) capitalized, converting those turnovers into 35 points. Kent State was 26-44 from the foul line, while the Huskies were 18-25 from the charity stripe. Kent State also had 16 seconds-chance points to the Huskies two.

Bowling Green (21-2, 10-0) comes into Saturday with a 14-game winning streak and a No. 17 ranking. The only two losses the Falcons have suffered have come to No. 1 Duke and Notre Dame. Bowling Green is on a 35-game MAC winning streak.

Bowling Green owns a 14-12 lead in the all-time series. The Falcons have won the last four meetings between the two schools. Bowling Green ended the Huskies run in the MAC Tournament last year, defeating NIU, 73-61. The last Huskie win came Feb. 18, 2004, when NIU won 102-97 in quadruple overtime.

NIU is 8-1 this season in the Convocation Center. The Huskies opened the season with their highest scoring output in almost 10 years when it posted a 97-69 victory over Illinois State. NIU is currently riding a six-game winning streak at the Convo.

The Bowling Green women's basketball game is Huskie Women's Basketball Girl Scout Day. Girl Scouts will have an opportunity to get autographs and meet the team following the game. Girl Scouts are admitted into the game for $2.00 and can participate in some of the in-game promotions. To celebrate National Girls and Women In Sport Day, NIU is offering all females a special admission price of $2.00.

The 2006 MAC West Champion NIU women's volleyball team will be on hand to sign autographs. Also on hand will be the sororietites of the NIU Panahellenic Council. They are taking donations for a "Youth Sporting Equipment Drive" which is a community service project they have been working on this semester. They are asking for donations which will be provided to youth in the DeKalb and Sycamore area.

Prior to the game, fans are welcome to stop by and visit different fitness vendors from the DeKalb and Sycamore area.

As always, at the conclusion of the game, all fans are welcome to participate in "Circle of Fans." Fans will be able to meet the players and coaches. In addition, the student-athletes will also be signing autographs.
