Pinehurst, N.C. -- The Northern Illinois men's golf team showed marked improvement in the final round of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate by Gatorade, as the Huskies shaved 10 strokes off of their second-round performance and placed 18th overall at The Centennial Pinehurst No. 8 [par 72, 7,092] on Tuesday.
Northern Illinois junior Zach Jecklin (Bloomington, Ill.) and freshman Andrew Frame (Manteno, Ill.) each topped the Huskies with a 232. Frame had a team-best final round tally of 75, while Jecklin followed with a 76.
Huskie redshirt freshman Matt Triplett (St. Charles, Ill.) fired a final-round 77, while sophomore Alex Wagner (St. Charles, Ill.) carded an 80. Freshman Tim Kay (Bartlett, Ill.) rounded out the scoring for NIU with an 81.
"We played a little better than our last two rounds," NIU head men's golf coach John Cleary said. "It was quite an improvement and everyone played a little better. I challenged the guys last night to at least improve so that the whole spring break trip wasn't in vain."
Indiana won the tournament with an 880, followed by Michigan (885), Penn State (889), Wisconsin (890), SMU (895), Mississippi (895), VCU (900), Eastern Michigan (903), North Florida (906), UNC-Greensboro (908), Marquette (908), East Carolina (909), Toledo (914), Marshall (918), Western Illinois (920), UNC-Wilmington (928), Ball State (931) and NIU (945).
Indiana's Jorge Campillo earned medalist honors with a 213 (-3), followed by Michigan's Bill Rankin (215), SMU's Colt Knost (215), Eastern Michigan's Graham Hill (216) and Michigan's Billy McKay (216).
NIU will take a few weeks off before participating in the Marshall Invitational, in Huntington, West Virginia, on April 6th.
