Westerville, Ohio -- Northern Illinois' Andrew Frame (Manteno, Ill.) is making a strong bid for Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year honors, as the Huskie newcomer is currently in eighth place at the MAC Tournament with a two-under par tally of 214 (74-72-68) at The Medallion Club, following Friday's third-round action.
"Andrew Frame played real well today," NIU head coach John Cleary said. "His ball-striking was great and he made some nice putts on the back nine."
As a team, NIU sits ninth in the tourney with a three-round total of 888. Akron is the clubhouse leader at 844, followed by Eastern Michigan (849), Kent State (854), Ball State (862), Ohio (871), Toledo (884), Bowling Green (886) and Miami (887).
Just four shots out of sixth place, Cleary and his squad know that there is still plenty to play for.
"We have to play for pride," Cleary said. "The guys are upbeat and we're going to have to put it all together on Saturday."
NIU junior Zach Jecklin (Bloomington, Ill.) struggled on Friday, carding an 80, moving him to a tie for 28th place at 222 (+6). Freshman Tim Kay (Bartlett, Ill.) was a steadying influence on the course with a season-best score of 70, while classmate Matt Triplett (St. Charles, Ill.) fired a third-round 79.
Eastern Michigan's Graham Hill and Kent State's Peter Ahn are the co-leaders of the tournament at eight-under-par (208). Akron's Ryan Culbertson and Brad Wright are tied for third at 209 (-7), while teammate Colin Clemente rounds out the top-five at 211 (-5).
Final round action is slated to begin at 7 a.m. (CDT) on Saturday morning.
