DEKALB, Ill. - Matt Gorman, a native of Waunakee, Wisc. who claimed regional and sectional titles during his prep career, has signed to play college golf for the Northern Illinois Huskies, NIU head coach John Cleary announced Tuesday. Gorman is NIU's first men's golf signee for 2009-10.
Gorman is a four-year letterwinner and three-time MVP of the Waunakee High School squad who helped lead the Warriors to third-place and second-place finishes in the Badger North Conference his sophomore and junior years, respectively. In three years of high school and junior golf, Gorman has garnered 12 individual titles, including medalist honors at the high school 2006 regional and 2007 sectional tournaments. He has been selected to the All-Conference first team three times.
Last summer, Gorman placed 14th at the AJGA (American Junior Golf Association) Woodward Video Junior Tournament played at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., shooting rounds of 74-73-70 on the par 71 course. He has played in numerous AJGA and WSGA (Wisconsin Junior Golf Association) tournaments throughout Wisconsin and the country.
"Matt brings a lot of tournament experience from all over the country," Cleary said. "He was a pretty good basketball player in high school so he is athletic and his father was the assistant coach at Wisconsin for a while so he knows what being a college golfer is about. Matt will be a good addition to the team."
Gorman was also a two-year letterwinner for the Waunakee High School basketball team which won conference titles in 2008 and 2009.
Aside from his athletic success, Gorman has performed well in the classroom - earning either honor roll or high honor roll status in each of his seven semesters.
Northern Illinois completed its 2008-09 men's golf season last weekend at the MAC Championships where NIU finished fifth, its highest placement at the league tournament since 1986.
