RIVER HILLS, Wis. - Saving his best round of the season for the final round of the Marquette Intercollegiate Monday, senior
Pierrick Fillon (Voreppe, France/Lycee Pierre Beghin) carded a 71 to record his first-ever top-25 finish. As a team, NIU finished ninth in the tournament.
"Rick is on a terrific trend right now, improving in all phases of the game as shown by his season-best round today," said Director of golf
Tom Porten. "He scrambled well and he's built confidence in his game. It's good to see his amateur play from last summer carry over into the college season."
Fillon was steady in the final round as he sunk two birdies - almost eagling out on the final hole - while recording 14 pars. Fillon finished +5 with a three-round score of 215 to tie for 25th.
Charlie Cameron (Canberra, Australia/Tyler J.C.) and
Paul Schlimm (Shorewood, Ill./Saint Francis) led the Huskies in birdies on the day as they both registered three. Schlimm tied for 43rd while Cameron tied for 49th.
Posting a team score of 298 in the final round, the Huskies completed the tournament with three scores under 300 for the first time this season. NIU last accomplished the feat the final three rounds of the Mid-American Conference Championship on April 30-May 1, 2016.
Overall, Porten was disappointed with the result but was pleased with the team's fight on the final nine holes.
"We had a good opportunity today playing against Wisconsin to advance or hold but we had some trouble on the back nine of the course where we teed off," he said. "We didn't execute some good closing holes and we tried to adjust but we weren't able to execute. But it was good to see our guys fight back on the front nine, we did a nice job of climbing back and giving ourselves a chance to hold."
Northern Illinois University will return to action Sunday, Oct. 9 and 10 when it hosts the Northern Intercollegiate at Beverly Country Club in Chicago. Fans can follow the tournament's live scoring on BirdieFire.
