DeKALB, Ill. – Senior
Charlie Cameron (Canberra, Australia) and sophomore
Salvador Rocha (Mexico City, Mexico) each shot three-over par 74 Sunday to lead Northern Illinois University in the final round of the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, played at Wolf Run Golf Club in Zionsville, Ind.
The rounds by Cameron and Rocha were the lowest of the weekend for the Huskies in the season-opening tournament, which was shortened to 36 holes due to rain on Saturday.
Cameron's final round gave him a two-day total of eight-over par 150, good for a tie for 37
th place, while Rocha was two shots back at 152, tied for 41
st.
"I liked how Charlie and Sal battled this weekend, especially today with the very demanding set-up and difficult hole locations," said NIU Head Coach
Tom Porten. "I like the direction both are headed to start the year."
As a team, NIU carded a 310 on Sunday as the Huskies counted a pair of 81s – by
Paul Schlimm (Shorewood, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and
Pierrick Fillon (Voreppe, France) – along with the 74s. NIU's two-day score of 618 put the team 13
th, within eight strokes of ninth-place finishers Louisville and Akron.
"A tough day for the Huskies on a tough golf course here at Wolf Run," Porten said. "Unlike yesterday, we got off to a much better start but could not manage the stretch of holes on our second nine and it cost us a Top 10 finish. We have to get much more consistent off the tee and around the greens. We have a week and a half before we head to Northwestern so that will be the focus."
Illinois claimed the team title by 13 strokes over Purdue.
NIU is in action again Sept. 25-16 at North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Illinois at The Windon event hosted by Northwestern.
