ZIONSVILLE, Ind. – The NIU men's golf team opened its 2016-17 season Saturday morning at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate in Zionsville, Ind., closing the day four strokes from the top-10 as the Huskies recorded a team score of 308.
Due to lingering storms over the Wolf Run Golf Club in the morning, the tournament was shorted to a 36-hole tournament with 18 holes on Saturday and another 18 on Sunday.
As team, Northern Illinois University finished -2 on the courses three par five holes, tied for the third-best stroke total on the day.
The Huskies No. 1 golfer
Charlie Cameron (Canberra, Australia/Tyler J.C.) paced the squad as he closed the day +5 with a 76, carding three birdies and 10 pars. Senior
Raphael Denais (Saint-Aventin, France/ Lycee Ste Ursule) and newcomer
Paul Schlimm (Shorewood, Ill./Saint Francis) rounded out the Huskies top-three as the duo both shot +6. Denais' four birdies led NIU on the day.
The Huskies 308 put them five strokes McNeese State and Louisville, who closed the first round tied for ninth.
