GLENVIEW, Ill. - Despite brisk winds at North Shore Country Club, NIU secured a 12th place finish at the Windon Memorial Monday afternoon.
The Huskies, who paired alongside Wisconsin and Indiana in the final round, defeated both Rutgers and DePaul at tournaments end, improving their standings by two spots by tournaments end.
Northern Illinois University shot a season-best 297 (+9) in the second round, which finished this morning after a late lightning delay yesterday evening forced players to clear the course. NIU closed the tournament with a 309, facing windy conditions later in the third round.
Senior
Pierrick Fillon (Voreppe, France/Lycee Pierre Beghin) closed the final round with a season-best 74 (+2) as he carded one birdie and 14 pars in the round and was trailed by teammate
Paul Schlimm (Shorewood, Ill./St. Francis), who shot a 75 with three birdies and nine pars.
Overall,
Charlie Cameron (Canberra, Australia/Tyler JC) and Fillon paced the Huskies as both finished tied for 40th. Cameron carded a 71 in the second round of play.
"The wind and challenging course set up made scoring difficult for the field. We got off to a very solid start but as the wind began gusting over 30 miles per hour, we struggled as a team," said Director of Golf
Tom Porten.
"It was good to see Paul and Rick play their best round as both controlled their ball flight and hit more to the center of the greens. On the flip side Charlie, Salvador and Raph were not able to keep the ball in the fairway enough and were on defense all day," he added.
Porten is confident the Huskies be ready for next week's challenge when they play in the Marquette Intercollegiate at Milwaukee Country Club in RiverHills, Wis.
"We learned some valuable lessons (this weekend) and will turn right around and get ready for Marquette this weekend."
