Men’s Golf Returns to Action for Weekend in Wisconsin

Huskies will head to Milwaukee Country club for the Marquette Intercollegiate

Men's Golf | September 30

DeKALB - The NIU men's golf team will turn their focus to the Marquette Intercollegiate on October 2 and October 3 in River Hills, Wisconsin after shooting its best round of the season at the Windon Memorial last weekend.

The Milwaukee Country Club will host the tournament and play at par 72 and 7,094 yards. The Huskies will face off against the likes of Ole Miss, SMU, UCLA and Wisconsin in the 10 team field.

The club was opened in 1929 and was designed by Harry Colt and Charles Alison. Minor revisions in 1974 make the course what it is today. Milwaukee Country Club hosted the 2008 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.

Golf Digest named The Milwaukee Country Club one of America's 100 greatest public or private courses in 2005-2006. The fairways are lined with large oak and maple trees that challenge golfers and also features large bunkers that provide a test for golfers.

This weekend's tournament will mark the debut of freshman Michael Mattas (Streamwood, Ill./St. Edward Central Catholic), who made the cut during the team's tournament qualifying round. Mattas was the 2016IHSA 1A State Champion and helped the Green Wave to a fourth-place team finish.

Northern Illinois University shot a 906 (+42) at the Windon Memorial last weekend that included a season-best 297 in the second round. Finishing 12th in the tournament, NIU defeated DePaul and Big Ten foe Rutgers during the tournament.

NIU had three golfers finish within the top-50 overall, led by both Charlie Cameron (Canberra, Australia/Tyler JC) and Pierrick Fillon (Voreppe, France/Lycee Pierre Beghin) who tied for 40th with a three-day score of 227 (+11). Cameron shot a season-best 71 in the second round while Fillon posted a season-best 74 in the final 18-holes of play.

Salvador Rocha (Mexico City, Mexico/American School Foundation) finished a stroke behind the Huskies leading duo with a 228 (+12), landing him in a tie for 45th. He also carded a fall best 73 in the second round. He finished the weekend with 34 pars.

Marquette, 10th place finisher at the Windon Memorial, will play host to the tournament this weekend. Northwestern, who finished fourth at the Windon, will also square off for the second-straight weekend against the Huskies.
