DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University gymnastics team heads to Kentucky University in Lexington to compete against host school as well as Illinois and Washington for a quad meet, Friday. The competition begins at 6 p.m. CST.
"We have been building and improving our score for this part of the season," said NIU head coach
Sam Morreale. "The goal this week is to worry about us and get that 24 for 24 again and see where that puts us. It's a pretty exciting time for us.
"We're trying to better what we did the week before or at the very least maintain what we did the week before. At this time of the year, we just want to show our consistency. That's the thing about this team. They've just consistently been really good."
Last week against Mid-American Conference foe Eastern Michigan, the Huskies recorded a season high 195.525 total team score to rank fourth in the NIU record book. The team also recorded the second highest floor score in school history at 49.250, marginally missing the record of 49.275.
The Huskies recorded a third record against the Eagles on the uneven parallel bars with a 49.125 with the second highest score of the season. The bars squad was led by senior specialist
Jamyra Carter (Ypsilanti, Mich./Huron) after recording her third career 9.900 and second of the season. Carter is currently a 9.868 on the event.
"I sound like a broken record, but it's her work ethic, her training and what she does day in and day out," said Morreale of Carter. "She just gets in a meet and does what she does every day in practice. The beauty of it is that this week in practice she did a routine that had nothing wrong with it, no deductions. That's just really impressive to watch because she is just really good at what she does. It's fun to see her reap those benefits. If she keeps doing what she's doing, she's got a shot to qualify for Nationals, which we haven't had in a while."
With the success that the Huskies have had thus far, the team is hoping once against to improve their career and season bests all around.
"We've switched over to the regional qualifying part of the year, and the top six scores count. Every time out, we have a chance to chip away at our lower scores to help our average. "
