YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Northern Illinois University gymnastics team returns from Eastern Michigan University with an added win to its record after outscoring the Eagles, 195.425-194.900.
"It feels good to get the win," said NIU head coach
Sam Morreale. "As much as we are competing against them, we are happy to hit the 195 mark again. We just had a lot of solid performances all around."
After getting off to a rough start, the Huskies bounced back and recorded a 49.050 on the balance beam to mark another team score on the top-ten record list as well as a 49.100 on floor , both of which are the highest event scores of the season.
The team was led by senior all- arounders
Ashley Potts (Oakwood Hills, Ill./Prairie Ridge) and
Katherine Prentice (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) as well as junior floor specialist
Anna Martucci (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes). Potts narrowly missed her career high score at 39.325 after setting it at 39.350 against Central Michigan at the end of January, while Prentice earned her season-high 39.100. With a nearly flawless routine, Martucci dazzled the judges to earn her third 9.900 of the season on floor .
Potts' all-around score was earned with a 9.825 on vault, 9.859 on bars, 9.850 on beam and tied her career-high on floor with a 9.800.
The beam squad started out strong with senior
Andie Van Voorhis (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard) leading off with a career-high 9.825 and was followed up with another career-high 9.825 from
Allison Richardson (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville).
On vault, the Huskies showed their consistency as they marked a team score of 38.800.
Amanda Bartemio (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) put up a 9.825 to tie her event-best score.
To round out the team's final score, NIU posted a 48.475 on the uneven parallel bars as they make progress from previous weeks. Prentice added a 9.725, while
Aubrie Purtell (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) pulled a 9.700 out of the judges with her routine.
It's a quick turn-around for the Huskies as they make the trip back home and head straight to UIC on Sunday. NIU will take on the Flames for the second time this season and are hoping for a little redemption from their first meeting.
The Huskies compete at 2 p.m. in Chicago and can be followed by
live results or by keeping tabs on the team's
Twitter account.
