CHICAGO – The Northern Illinois University gymnastics team brought home its second win of the weekend on Sunday after overcoming the UIC Flames, 195.025-193.625.
"Double weekends are always tough," said NIU head coach
Sam Morreale. "You always worry about the energy level, but they came out really ready for it. It was another really good day for us. I'm really happy with the performance and how we handled the weekend."
The afternoon saw high scores for the day on vault and balance beam where NIU posted 38.825 on both events. On the balance beam, senior all-arounder
Katherine Prentice (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) bettered her career high to 9.875 after recording her previous best of 9.850 seven times throughout her four seasons at NIU.
Beam was not the only record for Prentice. The senior captain added a new career-high all-around score of 39.275 into the mix, as well. Her beam routine was accompanied with a 9.875 on uneven parallel bars, a 9.775 on vault and a 9.750 on floor.
Prentice's fellow all-around competitor teammate
Ashley Potts (Oakwood Hills, Ill./Prairie Ridge) added to the Huskies' beam score with a 9.825, while freshman
Mia Lord (McCordsville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) earned her season-high score of 9.750 to add her contribution.
On vault, Potts led the Huskies once again with a 9.850 as the anchor. Prentice and sophomore
Cinny Lamberti (Grayslake, Ill./Grayslake) followed Potts on the leaderboard with matching 9.775 scores.
The floor event was led by the Huskies' junior specialist
Anna Martucci (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) as she anchored with a 9.850 on the event. Sophomore
Amanda Bartemio (Plymouth, Mich./Wayzata) added to the team's 48.750 on the event with a 9.775.
After seeing a slight setback earlier in the season on the uneven parallel bars, the Huskies have seen progress this weekend as they bettered their score from last weekend each time they competed this week. Today, they were able to improve their score for the second time with a 48.625 as a team. Potts and Prentice led the event, scoring 9.825 and 9.875, respectively.
This coming Friday, the Huskies will compete in their biggest meet of the regular season as they head to St. Charles, Mo. for the GymQuarters Invitational against Missouri, Minnesota, Arkansas, LSU, George Washington and Lindenwood.
