BOWLING GREEN, OH – The Northern Illinois University baseball team begins its final seven-game road trip of the season with a three-game set at Bowling Green State University Friday-Sunday.
The Huskies are looking to continue their momentum after a 12-4 victory over the University of Toledo to close out their home schedule at Ralph McKinzie Field May 6.
NIU sent its senior class –
Scooter Bynum (Fairbanks, Alaska /Arizona Western College),
Joe Jumonville (Munster, Ind./Munster),
Donovin Sims (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community),
Samuel Vega (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Southwestern Junior College),
Matthew Hoffmann (East Dubuque, Ill./Wahlert Catholic),
Brad Wood (Orland Park, Ill./St. Laurence),
George Faue (Corcoan, Minn./Iowa Central) and
Andrew Frankenreider (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) – out in style as the Huskies connected for 13 hits with Wood, Tommy Szczansy (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way North),
Kam Smith (Colonial Beach, Va./The Steward School),
Connor Montgomery (Newport Beach, Calif./Canyon) and Jumonville each smacking a double in the victory.
"Baseball is a crazy, cruel and very much rewarding game," Huskies' head coach
Mike Kunigonis said. "Fantastic job by our guys for coming out and being ready to play."
Jumonville led the offense as he finished with four RBI in the game, including a two-run single in the eighth inning that put the Huskies in front 11-4. Faue was also solid on the mound as he tossed 4 1/3 innings in relief and earned his second win of the season. He gave up only one run on two hits while striking out five batters.
"We've had so many small victories (this season) which are starting to trend things up for Huskie Ball and that's great," Kunigonis said. "We need to continue that this weekend as we're going up against a tough Bowling Green team who will be ready to play."
NIU has defeated Bowling Green in four of the last six meetings, including an 11-0 win in Dekalb March 31 last season.
