DeKALB, Ill. – Fifty-three Northern Illinois University student-athletes representing 15 of the Huskies' 17 sports programs were added to the ranks of Huskie alumni this past weekend as NIU held spring commencement ceremonies at the Convocation Center.
"Without question, graduation is one of my favorite days of the year," said NIU Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics
Sean T. Frazier, who attended several of Saturday's undergraduate ceremonies where he was able to personally greet many of the Huskies' student-athlete graduates. "As administrators, coaches and staff, graduation is the fulfillment of a promise we make to these student-athletes during the recruiting process, and evidence of our continuing commitment to each of them."
The newest Huskie grads include 15 members of the 2018 MAC Championship football team and four MAC Champion gymnasts, while the softball and men's soccer teams also had four graduates each. Of NIU's 16 total football graduates (including 2017 senior
Joe Sanders), seven will return to play for the Huskies in 2019. Overall, 11 Huskies slated to return in 2019-20 – like women's basketball players
Courtney Woods and
Ally May, and track and field All-American
Jehvania Whyte - earned their degrees this spring.
The Huskie football graduates also included tight end
Ty Harmston, who completed his master's degree in human anatomical sciences after five years with the program.
Huskie student-athlete graduates represented five colleges and 25 different majors. There were 21 Liberal Arts & Sciences grads and 15 from the College of Business. In addition, 11 student-athletes earned bachelor's degrees from the College of Health and Human Sciences, three from the College of Education and three from Engineering and Engineering Technology.
Several more Huskie student-athletes, including three from men's basketball, are on track to earn their NIU degrees this summer and were able to participate in the spring commencement ceremonies.
