Men's Golf | October 12
WEST LAFAYETTE, IN – The Northern Illinois University men's golf team finished 11th at the Purdue Fall Invitational at Kampen Golf Course, which wrapped up Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies battled rain in the second round Monday, which led to a suspension of the round which was picked up this morning.
"We encountered all kinds of different weather throughout the tournament," said head coach
John Carlson. "We had a long weather delay yesterday that ended up having teams play 27 holes yesterday and today. It led to a real test over two long days. We were solid in rounds one and three and had an unfortunate setback in round two from a score standpoint where we just didn't drive the ball well."
Tommy Dunsire was the Huskies' top finisher in the tournament, tying for 31
st with a 54-hole score of five-over par 221. Dunsire carded a one-under par 71 on Monday morning with four birdies. He completed his second round Tuesday with a 77. On Tuesday afternoon, Dunsire played his final six holes at two-under par to post a final round 73.
Ben Sluzas (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) also carded a final round 73 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 41
st at eight-over par. The freshman opened the tournament with a one-under par of 71 Monday morning.
Zach Place (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) had the Huskies' lowest round in the second round with a three-over par 75. He followed that up Tuesday afternoon with a two-over 74 to finish the tournament tied for 45
th at +10.
Luc Warnock (Windsor, Ontario, Canada/E.J. Lajeunesse) also finished 45
th at 10-over par. The junior improved with every round, going from a 79 in round one to 76 in round two and a final round 71 on Tuesday.
"The guys really finished off today's round strong," Carlson said. "We were five-under par on our last four holes and that's a testament to the mentality of our players, the grind, and just the talent level we have at NIU golf right now. Kampen Golf Course is a championship-level course and was certainly a tough test this week."
NIU was in seventh place after Monday's opening round, in which the Huskies posted a team score of eight-over par 296. The Huskies then fell to 11
th after a second round 306. The final round Tuesday was NIU's best of the week, posting a team score of three-over par 291. The Huskies finished at +29 as a team, three strokes behind Minnesota for 10
th place. Indiana won the event by one stroke over the host Boilermakers.
NIU is next in action Oct. 18-19 at the Xavier Invitational, hosted by Xavier at Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio.
