MUNCIE, Ind. – The Northern Illinois University women's track and field team traveled to the Ball State Tune-Up on Thursday (Feb. 18) with a smaller squad making its final preparations for next week's conference championship, coming home with event wins in a trio of field events.
Junior
Taylor Ramsey (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood Central) won the high jump, junior
Diamond Riley (St. Louis, Mo./Ritenour) and senior
Fatima Stingily (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) took top spot in the weight throw.
"The Ball State Tune-Up gave a small group of athletes that needed to work on technique issues that opportunity and others just an additional opportunity to compete," said NIU Director of Track and Field
Connie Teaberry. "We have a week before the MAC Championships and we feel good about where we are going in. I'm proud of the athletes up to this point, travel, competition set up, COVID testing and chances to compete have all been different this year, yet they continue to stay positive which is exactly what we need heading into conference."
In the high jump, Ramsey took first place by clearing 1.66 meters on her second attempt. Riley led the triple jumpers with a leap of 11.31 meters, beating out freshman teammate
Kendal Only (Huntley, Ill./Huntley), who finished second, by 0.38 meters as Only's best leap measured 10.93m.
Stingily had top-two finishes in both the weight throw and shot put. Her mark of 13.22 meters in the weight throw was first while her second-best shot put of the season, a throw of 11.34 meters, was second to Karmen Koch of Butler by just 0.12 meters.
NIU will now look ahead to next weekend's Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship, February 26-27 in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.
