Women's Golf | September 6
NORMAL, IL – The Northern Illinois University women's golf team opened its 2021-22 season this weekend at the Redbird Invitational, hosted by Illinois State at Weibring Golf Club. The Huskies took third place in the event behind a top-10 individual performance from
Jasmine Ly (Windsor, Ontario, Canada/Holy Names).
Ly was the Huskies' top finisher in the season-opening tournament, finishing seventh with a 54-hole score of three-over par 219 on the par 72 course. The sophomore had NIU's lowest score in Monday's final round with a one-under par 71. She shot even par in Sunday's opening round.
"We know Jasmine is going to perform for us and she did a great job," said head coach
Kim Kester. "She's played a lot of golf lately and she's played this course before and knows it well so I wasn't surprised with her showing."
Sophomores
Karen Liu (Taipei, Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Heping) and
Emily Romancew (Pierrefonds, Quebec, Canada/Ecole Secondaire Des Sources) both finished in the top-20 on the weekend. Liu had the best round by any Huskie in the tournament with her opening round two-under par 70 Sunday morning. She finished tied for 17
th at seven-over with a 54-hole tally of 223. Romancew finished one stroke behind Liu in a tie for 19
th at +8. After an opening round 77, Romancew bounced back with rounds of one-over 73 and two-over 74.
Freshman Jóhanna Lúðvíksdóttir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland) tied for 25
th at 10-over par in her debut as an NIU Huskie. Lúðvíksdóttir was one of three Huskies to post a one-over par round of 73 in Sunday's second round, which was NIU's best as a team. The Huskies had a team score of six-over par 294 in that round, a two-stroke improvement from round one. Senior
Sofia Gomez Enriquez (Asuncion, Paraguay/Montverde Academy) also shot a 73 in the second round, her best round of the weekend as she finished tied for 33
rd at +11.
"We didn't have the best first round, but overall a decent showing in our first event," Kester said. "We didn't know what to expect because we hadn't seen this group together before. It was good to see Emily [Romancew] and Johanna [Ludviksdottir] in the line-up. We knew what we had with Jasmine and Sofia and Karen had been locked down at home all summer so we weren't sure what to expect from her."
NIU finished the event with a team score of 23 strokes over par, seven strokes ahead of Butler who finished fourth. Eastern Kentucky won the event by nine shots over IUPUI.
"For the most part, we hit the ball pretty well," said Kester. "Our putting needs work at the moment and we'll focus on that in the next couple of weeks and be ready for the next tournament at Missouri."
The Huskies are back in action Sept. 27-29 at the Johnie Imes Invitational, hosted by Missouri at The Club at Old Hawthorne.
