SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Northern Illinois University women's track and field team competed in a pair of events in Texas this weekend as the Huskies participated in both the Bobcat Invitational at Texas State as well as the Texas Relays. NIU recorded 10 top-10 finishes at Texas State in the opening weekend of the outdoor season.
The top finish for the Huskies came in the 4x100-meter relay where the quartet of
Jazmyn Smith (Pinecrest, Fla./Gulliver Prep),
Malia Watkins (Upper Marlboro, Md./Missouri State),
Kimone Hines (Hanover, Jamaica/Southern-New Orleans) and
Skylynn Blue (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) recorded a time of 46.09 second to finish second behind only South Dakota (45.85).
Watkins and Blue were also in the top-10 in the 100 meters as Watkins posted a time of 11.86 second to claim fifth and Blue was 10th in 11.97.
Kadeja Campbell (St. Ann, Jamaica/Southern-New Orleans) had a pair of top-five finishes, taking third in the 400 meters and fourth in the 200 meters. Campbell ran a time of 54.53 seconds in the 400, behind only Bianca Stubler of Wisconsin (53.42) and Iowa State's Bria Barnes (54.40). Meanwhile in the 200, Campbell posted a time of 24.23 seconds, just over a quarter-second off the winning time of unattached competitor Melissa Gonzalez (23.97).
Also on the track,
Sara Atkins (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) was seventh in the 5,000 meters, running a time of 18:15.85.
In the triple jump,
Diamond Riley (St. Louis, Mo./Ritenour) and
Kenyae Majors (Burlington, N.C./Hugh Cummings) were both in the top-10 as Riley's best leap of the day measured 12.37 meters to take sixth and Majors was right behind with a top mark of 12.08 meters to finish seventh. Majors also finished eighth in the long jump, where her top mark measured 5.81 meters.
Taylor Ramsey (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood Central) was seventh in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.65 meters.
The Huskies also competed at the Texas Relays in Austin this weekend where
Brooke Lytle (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) posted the fastest time in the MAC early in the season in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing 11th in a time of 10:56.68.
NIU will return to action next Saturday, April 2, when the Huskies travel to Normal, Ill., to compete in the Redbird Invite.
