Arch Takes First at Lindenwood Open

Seven Huskies Place at the Open

ST. CHARLES, Mo.—Collin Arch (Palmyra, Mo./Palmyra) took home first place at the Lindenwood University Open in the 149-weight class for the Northern Illinois University Huskies wrestling program.

Arch was one of seven Huskies to place, including placing in the consolation brackets. The Huskies competed in the Gold Division and the Black Division (Freshman/Sophomore).

"Competing in events like this is key to the development of these guys," said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. "We had some solid performances and a lot to bring back and work on in the room. Collin Arch was impressive with his dominant championship effort today."

Arch opened his day with a major decision victory over Quincy's Hunter Vernon as he tallied two major decision victories, two wins by fall, and two wins by decision. Arch, who competed in the 149 Black Division concluded his day with a 7-3 decision over Iowa's Koye Grebel.

At the 285-weight class for the Gold Division, Jacob Christensen (Durham, Calif./Durham) claimed first place in the consolation bracket. Christensen earned two victories by fall in the consolation bracket before winning the bracket with a 4-2 decision over Matthew Weinert of Arkansas-Little Rock.

Aiden Smith (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) took home second place in the consolation bracket in the 157 Gold Division. Smith fell in his opening bout to Oklahoma State's Jalin Harper by a 2-0 decision as he moved to the consolation bracket. Smith won in sudden victory (-1) as he won three straight bouts to reach the consolation finals. Smith fell by a major decision in the first place match as he took second in the consolation bracket.  

Sean Carroll (Overland Park, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) claimed third place at 197 in the Black Division and earned a technical fall win in his first bout of the day. Carroll won in sudden victory (-2) in the quarterfinal round before falling in the semifinal round. Carroll claimed his major decision victory of the season to advance to the third place match, where he battled to his second sudden victory (-2) win of the day.

Tyler Martinez (Plano, Ill./Yorkville Christian) finished in fourth place for the Huskie wrestling program at 165 in the Black Division. After an opening round bye, Martinez got his first win of the day, a fall over Missouri Baptist's Cooper Dunn. Martinez added two more wins by decision on the day before falling in the third place match.

In the 157-weight class for the Black Division, Gavynn Carpenter (Hallsville, Mo./Hallsville) finished in fifth place with a technical fall over Ayden Kingery of Indian Hill Community College. On route to his fifth place finish, Carpenter opened his day with back-to-back major decision victories and a fall in the quarterfinal round.

Alec Rees (Sparta, Mich./Sparta) competed in the Gold Division at 157-pounds for the Huskies and took home sixth place at the open. Rees started his day with back-to-back technical fall victories, his first two technical fall wins of the season. Rees won by fall in the quarterfinals before falling by a technical fall in the semifinals. Rees dropped his final two matches of the day to claim sixth place at 157-pounds.  

The Huskies return to the mat on Nov. 19 as they compete in the Boilermaker Duals. The Huskies will take on the University of Indianapolis at 10 a.m. Eastern before facing Purdue at 2 p.m.
